Taiwan writer Qi Jun’s prose has attracted more attention, and her novels need to be explored systematically.Qi Jun’s novels have these profound and relevant background. In an era of intense convergence of new and old cultures,Qi Jun was born in a family with a Confucian background in Wenzhou,Zhejiang province. She was immersed in classical literature since childhood. She was also influenced by folk Buddhist culture and regional culture, and later learned morden culture and ideas. After going to Taiwan in 1949,Qi Jun wrote several novels.According to the author’s research on both sides of the strait, there are 69 articles, most of which have not been discussed by our academic circles, and they have historical value.Qi Jun’s novels are mostly based on real life, involving marriage and love, local nostalgia, and modern social issues in the transitional era. Therefore, this paper is based on the question consciousness of the modernization of Chinese literature during past hundred years, using theories of modernity, gender culture,Buddhism, regional culture, etc, applying research methods such as textual research, documentary methods, text analysis, interdisciplinary research, the combination of internal research and external research, and then tries to explore the theme of Qi Jun’s novels systematically. This is a comprehensive and innovative research project with pioneering and innovative features. From the perspective of modern social transformation and literary transformation, the theme of Qi Jun’s novels contains modernity, and her profound traditional cultural heritage constitutes a distinct anti-modernity.At the same time, the two aspects are also intertwined, forming polyphonic characteristics. As far as modernity is concerned,it is mainly reflected in the release of emotional desire and the rationality of enlightenment. The former is mainly the manifestation of material desire and passion in the novel, which is not obvious. The latter is manifested by checks and balances of sensual desires, critique of feudal ideas, and development of modern female consciousness. The anti-modernity includes two aspects, one is to reflect on the dilemma of enlightenment rationality from women’s independent perspective, the other one is inherit traditional Confucianism,Buddhism and other cultural resources and reflect on the problems of modern society,In Confucianism, traditional morality and values are used to balance modern material desire and lust.In Buddhism, compassion, causality, and psychological torture are used to convey influence and teaching, and to implement practical care and ultimate concern.Polyphonic characteristics are mainly reflected in the novel narrator wandering in the old family affection and anti-feudal,showing a complex emotional psychological state, the characters in the novel are often lost between the traditional and the modern, and also emotional release and moral restraint. The themes of Qijun’s novels are based on tradition, and at the same time integrate modernity, which have rich complements to contemporary literature. These are three specific aspects. The first is Taiwan literature, the themes enrich the themes of novel. The anti-modernity and traditional cultural connotation create an aesthetic dialogue and cultural complementation in Taiwan society, which enhances Taiwanese literature’s sense that it belongs to the maternal culture and enriches the modernization experiences of literature.Secondly,in terms of women’s literature,Qi Jun combined with her own experiences and knowledge, shaped many female and male images truly and deeply, looked for women’s right to speak, reflected on women’s liberation, and provided unique ideas and values for the modernization offemale literature.Thirdly,in terms of Buddhist literature, the Buddhist themes of Qijun’s novels are not profound and obtrusive, but are conveyed through the character and emotional connotation of the characters in the narrative of daily life. There is an integration with Confucianism, which is closer to the aesthetic ideal of goodness and beauty, which is easy for readers. The three aspects are intertwined in Qijun’s novels.
