| As the modernization process is accelerating,Chi Zijian,the "retrograde wizard",chooses to look back,look back to the primitive nature and traditional culture.Therefore,many scholars point out that Chi Zijian’s novels have the characteristic of anti-modernity.Most of them judge the cultural position of Chi Zijian’s novels from the perspective of the duality of tradition and modernity,but in fact,Chi Zijian’s novels are not the appeal of anti-modernity but the appeal of modernity.Her critique of modernity is a sober reflection in the carnival of modernity.Through her novels,she presents the lack of modern civilization in an all-round way.She hopes that the modernity plan will continue to be improved,and she imagines that modernization can be carried out in a more friendly way.Therefore,Chi Zijian’s novels have the characteristics and essence of aesthetic modernity.Modernity is dual,and the criticism of modernity has been accompanied by the process of modernization.China’s modernization is forced to open and develop rapidly in the national crisis.Although the mainstream of Chinese modern literature is the pursuit of modernity,there is inevitably anti modernity writing.Chi Zijian not only inherited Lu Xun’s method of exposing reality to cause healing,but also continued the poetic and rural style of writers such as Fei Ming and Shen Congwen.Starting from reality and ideals,she criticized reality and built an ideal spiritual home.Her anxiety and criticism of modernity are mainly manifested in four aspects,namely the loss of natural homeland,the decline of national culture,the shrinking of human spirit and the intensification of social contradictions.In the large wave of modern business where the humanistic spirit is gradually losing,Chi Zijian hopes to construct an ideal home that can comfort people’s hearts through the spirits of warmth,divine awe,natural authenticity,and self-reflection,so as to cope with the impact of modern civilization.In the dilemma of modernity,the anti-modern humanistic care of Chi Zijian’s novels adheres to the literary conscience of "literature is humanity",demonstrates the spirit of ecological humanism,and constructs a spiritual garden of Eden for people,but at the same time,there are limitations such as ideal nihility and cultural deviation. |
