Based on the theory of eco-translation,this report intends to study the translation of The Overall Planning of the Xingkai Lake,Heilongjiang, issued by the Survey and Planning Institute of State Forestry Administration, and explore the translation methods using the eco-translatological concepts of adaptation and selection in the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. The Planning discusses the current situation, existing problems and planned solutions of the Xingkai Lake Biosphere Reserve. As the general feature of a government planning document, the language in this Planning is characterized with concise diction, formal style and rigid logic, involving a large number of abstract nouns, verbs and terms related to ecology and environmental protection. With reference to the theory of eco-translation and the features of government planning documents, this report employs the method of case study, and focuses on how to make adaptive selections in the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. In the linguistic dimension, abstract nouns are often converted into other word classes, omitted when they have no meaning, properly paraphrased or explained if they have extended meanings, verbs replaced with prepositions, nouns, gerunds,or omitted, parallel phrases with similar meaning translated selectively. In the cultural dimension, translation of terms related to the Chinese-specific system, names of local festival and local expressions is discussed.Discussion of communicative dimension focuses on how to make logical relations explicit,so as to achieve the communicative purpose of appealing to the public to protect the environment.During translation,multi-dimensional adaptation and selection may help better achieve its ultimate purpose of communication. As an attempt to apply eco-translatology to the translation of government planning documents, the report aims to suggest that translators adapt to the ecology of the target language, make adaptive selections through three-dimensional transfer as a way to improve the translation quality. It is hoped that the study can provide some help for the translation practice of this kind.
