| This report is on the translation of The Digital Mind-How Science is Redefining Humanity,a book by Arlindo Oliveira,president of IST(Instituto Superior Técnico).The book is a standard scientific text,which is published by MIT Press in 2017.The excerpt talks about the relationship between the intelligent machine and the human brain and puts forth the possibility of creating a digital mind.The source text belongs to scientific text.It is objective,with strong logic and coherence in language.In addition,the source text is also featured with many professional terms and abbreviations,passive voices and complex sentences.In view of its text type and characteristics,the translator applies the Nida’s functional equivalence theory to the translation and summarizes different translation strategies adopted during the process at lexical,syntactic and textual level.At lexical level,the translator adopts strategies of the extension of semantic meaning,class shift and four-character idiom using.At syntactic level,strategies of amplification,voice conversion and division are applied to the translation.At textual level,strategies of addition and conversion are used.Many examples are given to illustrate different strategies adopted to the translation.The translator tries to improve the accuracy of the translation on the basis of realizing lexical,syntactic and textual equivalence,wishing to provide some cases or references for the English to Chinese translation on digital mind. |
