A Report On Translation Of Social Work With Older People

The translation material is taken from the fourth and the fifth chapter of Social Work with Older People.The book is written by American sociologist Barbara Hall and Terry Scragg in 2012,which belongs to sociology text.The authors detail the factors influencing many aspects of social work with older people,as well as some effective measures to keep the old in good physical and mental health.The language is accurate,objective and logical.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory,various translation strategies and methods are adopted to reproduce these features and styles in the process of translation.Based on Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,the practice report focuses on the language features of source text and analyzes typical cases from the translation practice at the four levels of lexis,syntax,discourse and style.The translator selects proper nouns and polysemes at the lexical level;long and difficult sentences and passive sentences at the syntactic level;reference,conjunction and ellipsis at the textual level,as well as some other words and structures that conform to the objectivity and accuracy of source text at the stylistic level,summarizing translation strategies and methods which contribute to achieving the equivalence between the source text and the target one.Through the translation practice,it is concluded that the Functional Equivalence Theory plays an important role in guiding the translation of sociology texts.Meanwhile,the translator also summarizes the experience accumulated in the translation process,which lays a solid foundation for sociology texts translation.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 31...
