A Study Of Creative Treason In Translation Of Go Set A Watchman

Harper Lee is a famous American writer who won the Pulitzer Prize for Novels by her literary work To Kill a Mocking Bird.Harper Lee,however,is not a prolific writer,who has written only two novels in her whole life.The first one is the famous To Kill a Mocking Bird,the other is Go Set a Watchman,the continuation of To Kill a Mocking Bird.Go Set a Watchman was originally created in the 1950 s when the American black civil rights movement emerged.It is in this context that the novel tells the story that the heroine Jean Louise returned to her hometown when she was an adult.But she gradually found that her friends and family had changed their attitudes towards the black people.Then the values and beliefs she held on to were on the verge of collapse.The novel,as a follow-up to the To Kill a Mocking Bird,uses a lot of memories and psychological descriptions,and has a strong racial color.And it contrasts the attitudes of the heroine and her friends and family towards blacks from a third-person perspective.Comparing with To Kill a Mocking Bird,her friend preferred Go Set a Watchman,which had kept the literary work on hold for a long time.It was not published until 2015.In 2017,Zhang Yun translated it into Chinese,and it was published by Yilin Press.Once the translation was published,it had long been popular with readers in the best-selling list of Yilin Press.From the concept of treason,this thesis deeply analyzes the phenomenon of creative treason in the Chinese translation of Go Set a Watchman by exploring the factors that affect creative treason.In the field of translation,many scholars often regard loyalty as the criterion to judge translation works.However,the difference between different languages and cultures negates the existence of a completely faithful translation.In order to seek a run-in between the original and the translated works,the translator has to use creative treason properly while being loyal to the original works,so that she can make her translation keep in line with the target language expression habits are in line.The reason why the translation of Go Set a Watchman can become a best-selling translation is largely related to the translator's creative treason.The purpose of this thesis is to explore the factors influencing creative treason and the phenomenon of creative treason in Go Set a Watchman.It is found that loyalty and creative treason can coexist harmoniously.Second,the objective factors that limit creative treason are language,culture,and the subjective factors are original author,translator and target language readers.Besides,ideology also influences creative treason from the choice of works and reading comprehension.Finally,the translator uses some expressions ofcolloquial Chinese,four-character Chinese idioms,the skills of addition and mistranslation in Go Set a Watchman,realizing the transition from the original to the translation,and making the translation achieve a value-added effect.This thesis mainly uses the method of case study to research the Chinese translation of Go Set a Watchman.There are six chapters.In the first chapter,the thesis briefly introduces the research background and purpose.Then the research questions are put forward,and the basic framework of the research is outlined.In the second chapter,the first part is the introduction to the previous studies on creative treason at home and abroad;the last part is the introduction to the previous studies on Go Set a Watchman at home and abroad.The third chapter analyzes the connotation of creative treason and the harmonious coexistence of creative treason and loyalty,and discusses the performance of creative treason.The fourth chapter expounds the objective factors and subjective factors that limit creative treason respectively.The fifth chapter analyzes and discusses the phenomenon of creative treason in Go Set a Watchman from four angles of colloquial Chinese,addition,four-character idioms and mistranslation.Finally,a conclusion is made,the demerits are pointed out,and a future study is predicted.
