Edward hope is a famous American realist painter in the 20 th century.Through the use of light and shadow,he can control the visual effect of the picture,create the emotional atmosphere of the picture,and then express and convey the lonely emotion.The painting language of light and shadow has almost become a symbol of hope's expression of loneliness,and "hope style" has also become a synonym for the American scene in that period.This paper will mainly analyze and study the important role of light and shadow language in the expression of painting and the important significance of lonely emotion.This article is includes five parts: the first part introduces Hope's work and its forming factors in the 20 th century American painting environment;the second part explores the "interference" effect of the application of light and on other screen elements in "hope style" works,that is,the "supremacy" of light and shadow;the third part discusses the light in Edward hope's painting The important relationship between the shadow language and the visual effect of the picture,the lonely emotion of the picture,and how the light and shadow interfere with other picture languages,together play a role in the construction and integration of the lonely emotion of the picture.The fourth part expounds the time connotation of hope style painting,mainly including the emotional sustenance and the painting spirit beyond the mainstream for the urbanite.In the fifth part,the author introduces some inspirations of studying the light and shadow language in hope's painting to his personal creation,mainly in the aspects of the operation of the picture form and the rendering and construction of the picture atmosphere.
