As a representative painter of American spirit,Edward Hopper’s works are characterized by abstract elements contained in seemingly concrete and realistic pictures,which are not only like narrative fragments,but also have thought-provoking artistic conception.Hopper’s paintings are mostly based on the scenes of daily life and the scenery of the suburbs of American cities,but the series of ordinary scenes depicted by the painter have an intriguing sense of fuzzy diversity.The complex and contradictory nature of Hopper’s art bears many similarities to the "iceberg style" of writing proposed by Ernest Miller Hemingway."Iceberg style" was first used to describe literary writing.It is a metaphor to inspire the viewers to think about the works in various aspects by expressing the most with the least and omits the unnecessary description of the author’s experience,as if it is the re-creation of the viewers."Iceberg style" a creative way can also be used in the analogy,describe the creation of the Hopper,Hopper works in subject matter content and composition of normal form of simplification,the symbolic color utilization,build atmosphere of light and shadow,the character psychology implicit expression of the creation of the collect inside,serious attitude,chaotic and obscure theme processing,to idealize,go directly to the critical characteristics and "iceberg style" technique has a lot of relevance.
