A Report On The E-C Translation Of Madagascar:The Eighth Continent(Excerpts)

Madagascar is an Indian Ocean country and one of China's important cooperative partners under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.Therefore,translation and research of the works about this country is of great significance.Madagascar: The Eighth Continent is a typical informative text,which describes the author's experience in Madagascar and introduces the natural environment and customs of Madagascar in vivid and realistic language.As there are many dialects,rhetorical devices and idioms as well as characters and environmental descriptions in the source text,translators should accurately convey the information of the source language and reproduce the artistic effect of the original works by adopting appropriate translation strategies.This translator chose British translation theorist Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory to guide this translation practice.This theory holds that the effect of the target text should be similar to that of the source text;therefore,translators should consider the cultural background and psychological feelings of target readers and not leave obscurities and misunderstanding to them.Under the guidance of this theory,the translator has used many translation strategies on the lexical,syntactical and textual levels to accurately convey the information in the original text so that its contents and language can be fully appreciated by target readers.This report consists of five parts.Chapter One is task description,introducing task background,task goal,task meaning,text selection and report structure.Chapter Two describes the translation process of Madagascar: The Eighth Continent from the three stages: the preparation stage,the while-translation stage and the post-translation stage.Chapter Three is the theoretical framework,which presents the contents and application of Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory.Chapter Four is the translation case analysis,which elaborates on how the translator applied the communicative translation theory to the translation practice from the lexical,syntactical and textual levels.Chapter Five summarizes the translator's major findings and shortcomings and hopes that this report can provide references for the translation of informative texts based on Communicative Translation Theory in the future.
