Senior high school English teaching has long been criticized for being time-consuming and inefficient,because remembering grammar rules,doing exercises,and recitations are the current norms in English learning.The result of this learning method is that students have a single learning style.Oftentimes they have extrinsic motivation instead of intrinsic motivation thus failing to enjoy the English subject,and English teaching content also lacks humanity.This study believes that developing students’ English reading ability helps students to get out of the current situation of English teaching being inefficient and excessively repetitive;especially literature reading is the core of improving English reading ability.Literary works are not only an important carrier for learning languages and understanding literature,but also the quintessence of human thought and culture.Teaching literature in High School will stimulate students’ intrinsic learning motivation and help to improve English language ability,also it will improve humanistic literacy and students’ comprehensive quality.The dissertation first uses a questionnaire to clarify the current extracurricular reading status of senior high school students.The results found that: senior high school students’ extra-curricular reading volume was far below the curriculum standards;students lacked intrinsic motivation in English learning and literary literacy,and students also lacked reading awareness and guidance in English learning;under the influence of the current college entrance examination,there is also a widespread emphasis on knowledge and capacity.Most of the teaching is based on teachers’ explanation of vocabulary and grammar rules,and the amount of language input is small.In English teaching,they neglect the cultivation of students’ ability to extract and process information,and they neglect the cultivation of students’ analytical and problem-solving skills.The rote learning makes it difficult for students to develop comprehensive language skills in listening,speaking,reading and writing,and it is difficult to develop students’ thinking ability,the ability to analyze problems,and the ability to solve problems.Based on the analysis of the current situation,this article proposes to take literary reading as a key."High School English Course Standards" lists English literature appreciation as an optional course.The course standard is specified in the eighth level of the language skills target,and learners can enjoy the plain English literature with the help of the teacher.The ninth level of the language skill target is provided.The learners can read the general English originals,grasp the main plot,and understand the main characters.The author introduces optional literature reading materials in the high school English classroom,and develops literature reading teaching based on Krashen’s second language acquisition theory,learning motivation theory,and autonomous learning theory.Taking literature teaching as an important channel for language learning and humanistic spirit cultivation,it also reflects the instrumentality and humanity of ordinary high school English courses.The author of the thesis has carried out literary reading teaching experiments during a semester.The research mainly uses the literature research method,investigation research method and experimental research to actively explore from the aspects of material selection,classroom teaching mode,post-reading activities,etc.,and concludes after continuous attempts to adjust.The teaching mode of "cooperative material selection,teacher’s guide reading,independent reading,group discussion,joint appreciation,writing after reading,multi-criteria evaluation" was introduced.The study found that after proper guidance,most students are willing to read English literary works,and in a comprehensive view,this study can explore the localization of literary genre teaching mode,improve students’ comprehensive English ability,enhance students’ humanities,and stimulate the intrinsic motivation of English learning.It also has certain reference value for teachers.
