Vulnerable Narcissist's Empathy For Pain

Objective: To study the relationship between vulnerable narcissism and pain empathy,and the effect of attention mechanism on pain empathy of individuals with vulnerable narcissism.in experiment 1,the point probe task combined with pain assessment task was used to evaluate the pain empathy ability and attention bias of vulnerable narcissists.In experiment 2,on the basis of experiment 1,eye movement devices were used to track the attention change mechanism of subjects when watching picture stimulating materials,and to study the cognitive model of vulnerable narcissism in pain empathy with others from a deeper level.and how it affects the empathy ability of vulnerable narcissists.Methods: in experiment 1,136 college students were selected to complete the HSNS scale and PANAS scale,followed by the point probe task and the pain assessment task.The pain assessment task took the pain degree score as the behavioral index,and the attention bias index was the average reaction time of pain inconsistency minus the average reaction time of pain consistency.The location of the detection point is the same as that of the pain face,and the location of the detection point is different from that of the pain face.To explore the relationship between vulnerable narcissism,attention bias and pain empathy.Experiment 2: a total of 136 college students were selected to complete the HSNS scale and PANAS scale,and then to evaluate the pain.The pain score was used as the behavioral index,the time to first fixation,fixation count,and total fixation time were taken as the eye movement index.To further explore the attention mechanism of pain cues in vulnerable narcissism,and how this attention mechanism affects the empathy ability of vulnerable narcissists.Results: in experiment 1,it was found that the score of vulnerable narcissism negatively predicted the score of pain empathy.The score of vulnerable narcissism significantly negatively predicted the score of pain empathy,and the higher the degree of vulnerable narcissism,the weaker the ability of pain empathy,which is consistent with the results of previous studies.On the other hand,the score of vulnerable narcissism is significantly negative to predict attention bias,and attention bias plays a significant mediating role.The results of experiment 2 showed that the score of vulnerable narcissism significantly negatively predicted the score of pain empathy rating.That is,the higher the degree of vulnerable narcissism,the worse the ability of pain empathy.The negative score of vulnerable narcissism significantly predicted the three indexes of ocular AOI,which showed that the stronger the degree of vulnerable narcissism,the slower the first fixation time,the less the fixation times,and the less the total attention duration.In addition,the overall attention duration of eye AOI played a significant mediating role.Conclusion: this study found the effect of vulnerable narcissism on pain for empathy,the higher the degree of vulnerable narcissism,the weaker the ability of pain empathy,and the difference of attention bias has an impact on their ability of pain empathy.
