This thesis uses the Chinese translation of American author Rainbow Rowell’s novel Fangirl as an example to explore the application of Functional Equivalence Theory in the Chinese translation of fiction translating. The original text has a strong personal touch with the original author, the language is refined, funny and humorous, and it is difficult to translate.Functional equivalence theory advocates the use of translation techniques to try to make target readers feel the same way as the source reader, with meaning and stylistic equivalence. When translating, the translator should not only convey the author’s meaning faithfully, but also reproduce the style of the original text’s author as completely as possible. The material translated in this project is rich in the characteristics of modern popular fiction: more active vocabulary, more long sentences in the text. The focus of this paper is on how to get the target reader to feel the same or similar feelings as the source readers in order to achieve functional equivalence between the source and target texts. Therefore, this paper uses some translation methods guided by Neda’s Functional Equivalence Theory. For example,in the translation practice, translation methods such as conversion of parts of speech,Conversion from positive to negative, addition and omission are used. When dealing with long sentences, linear and adverse translation, division are employed. Finally, the author puts forward his views on the treatment of style in fictional texts: under the characteristics of the colloquialism and metaphorical style of the original text, expletives should be treated differently according to the emotions of the speaker,culture-loaded words should find a similar expression in Chinese;in sentences with obvious metaphorical style, the translation of culturally loaded words should find expressions in Chinese that can elicit similar reactions from readers, and in other cases, they should be supplemented by direct translation. With the summary of this translation practice, the author hopes to suggest some references for similar works.
