The reform of education in China is at a critical stage,the English Curriculum Standards for the Senior High Schools(2017)is one of the symbols.Under the guidance of the English Curriculum Standards for the Senior High Schools(2017),the NSE textbooks(2019)are published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press.In the fall of 2019,teachers and students in senior high schools use the new textbooks at the first time.Based on The Guidance on the Implementation of the New Curriculum and the New Textbook of the Senior High School,the Ministry of Education stresses the follow-up surveys on the use of teaching materials.There are three research questions in this study:(1)What are the teachers’ and students’ cognition and attitude of the NSE textbooks(2019)in senior high schools?(2)What teaching methods and techniques by teachers are used when using the NSE textbooks(2019)in senior high schools?(3)What difficulties are in the implementation in senior high schools? This study researched the use of the NSE textbooks(2019)of effective 83 teachers in senior high schools in Yantai and other districts and 162 effective students in Yantai from Grade ten through questionnaires by the SO JUMP app to get more effective data.5 teachers are interviewed.The interviews of teachers give more details of the use the textbook in order to find the answers of the three research questions and also give some suggestions based on the existing difficulties.The interviews of teachers and class observations are integrated to find teacher’s teaching methods and techniques of the use of the textbook.Students’ questionnaire is mainly for the students’ cognition and attitude,difficulties of the use of the textbooks.Students’ questionnaire is as the feedback data and complement for the teachers’ questionnaire.In this study major findings are summarized as following:(1)Most of the teachers have a clear cognition and attitude of the new textbooks.Discourse is diverse and genre is various,the language is authentic and vivid;the topics are the highlight of the textbooks,topics are close to students’ life.The new textbooks can cultivate students’ key competences and leaning capabilities.Moral education,cultural awareness,thinking quality and global comprehension are also showed in the textbooks.(2)Most teachers follow the guidance of the English Curriculum Standards for the Senior High Schools(2017)to use and organize the lesson with the activity-based learning and learner-centered theory.(3)To have a better use of the textbooks,many teachers use some teaching methods and techniques,such as adding materials,reorganizing and replacing the content or adapting the textbooks.Collaboration,it’s a useful method to solve the difficulties for teachers and students.(4)Difficulties of the use of the NSE textbooks(2019)are obvious.It is difficult for the rural students,especially for the students whose language level is low to learn the new textbooks.Vocabulary is difficult and the quantity of the vocabulary is large,that is also a new challenge for the senior high school teachers and students.To better use the NSE textbooks(2019),there are some suggestions.(1)When using the new textbooks,teachers shall adapt the textbook based on the teaching situation.(2)The new textbook let teachers learn more cross-cultural and interdisciplinary knowledge to have a deep understanding of the content to deal with new changes of the development of key competences.(3)Students should have a short transition lesson to fit the new textbooks from junior schools to senior high schools.
