With the 2017 edition of senior high school English new curriculum standard proposed to cultivate students’ subject core literacy,English reading learning has been given more profound significance.Professor Wang Qiang’s team put forward the theoretical framework of English reading literacy development goals for primary and middle school students in 2016,which is composed of reading ability and character.Reading character and reading ability complement each other,reading ability is the basis of reading character,and reading character is a strong sustainable development of reading ability.Reading character pays more attention to students’ emotion,behavior and other factors in English reading.To some extent,it makes up for the defect of traditional teaching emphasizing skill cultivation and neglecting emotional motivation.At the same time,it accords with the cultivation of key competence in curriculum standard,which is beneficial to the development of students’ comprehensive language use ability and the realization of students all-round development.Therefore,the current situation of English reading character of middle school students is gradually concerned.In view of this,the author use the questionnaire and interviews to investigate the current situation of high school students’ English reading character.Firstly,the author reviews and sort out the relevant literature at home and abroad,and tries to explore the present situation and existing problems of high school student’s English reading character.Then the author conducted a questionnaire survey on some students in six high schools in Hainan Province to understand the current situation and and existing problems of students’ English reading character.The survey results show that the development of students in both English reading habits and English reading experience still needs to be improved,and students have the phenomenon of low reading interest and poor reading habits.The the author interviewed the teachers of six school,such as GX and HS,in order to understand the teachers;detailed views on the cultivation of student’s reading character and the difficulties and reasons of students in developing reading character.Through the questionnaire and interview,the author finds that the problems of high school students’ English reading character are: students do not develop good reading habits,students’ reading interest needs to be improved,teachers’ understanding of the concept of reading character is vague,and teachers ignore the development of students’ reading character.Finally,according to the problems existing in the development of students’ English reading character,the reasons are explored and the corresponding suggestions are given in order to help the first-lineteachers better cultivate students’ reading character,enrich their teaching connotation and improve their teaching effect.
