Civil aviation industry in China is undergoing rapid development and improvement. Therefore,it is important to translate the civil aviation rules and regulations. This translation practice report is based on the E-C translation of Sections 10 and 15,Chapter 11,Volume 6 excerpted from Order 8900.1 and published in Federal Aviation Administration's Flight Standards Information Management System. The features of the source text are frequent use of terminologies and fuzzy languages. In the translation practice, terminologies are divided into standardized terminologies and non-standardized terminologies. For standardized terminologies that have been translated and confirmed within the civil aviation sector, the translations of terminologies must be searched and verified from civil aviation rules and regulations or documents published by the authority. As for the terminologies whose translations have not been recognized by the authority or within the sector, the methods of creation and definition are used in accordance with the principles of accuracy, readability and transparency.Besides, the source text shares the characteristic of fuzziness. With the dialectical relations between the fuzziness and precision serving as a bridge, strategy of literal translation is employed to convert the fuzzy languages into the corresponding fuzziness in the target language, and the strategy of explanatory translation is used to shift the fuzziness to precision. The purpose is that the original information in the source text has been conveyed faithfully and comprehensively.
