In the 20 th century, the field of art is surging, during which abstract art replaced the traditional reproducibility art which has been dominant for a long time.Modern abstract art,as a new art trend, has begun to flourish and received more and more attention. This new art trend is often called modernism. The development of modernism not only impacts and destroys the traditional aesthetic thought, but also promotes the development of formalism in the field of aesthetics.Russian formalism,British and American new criticism,British formalism, symbolic aesthetics, structuralism and other aesthetic schools all give the meaning of "form" diversity from different perspectives. The main body of the paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter elaborated Bell's art is " significant form".The analysis of Kant's beauty has an important influence on Bell's formal aesthetics.Moore's realism philosophy provides Bell's writing with methodological support.Frye's theory of art form had a direct impact on bell."Form" is a "pure form" which has nothing to do with the interests of real life," significance" is a special aesthetic emotion, can only be aroused through the observation of "pure form"."Simplification" and "composition" are the key to grasp "significant form".The second chapter focuses on Langer's art theory.Langer's theory is based on symbolic logic.Langer was influenced by semantics during the period, and later by Cassirer's cultural philosophy, forming a complete aesthetics of artistic symbols. Therefore,Langer's semiotic theory is different from the structuralist aesthetics based on Saussure's linguistics.Langer put forward artistic semiotic different from Linguistic symbols.Artistic semiotic are inseparable organic structures with integrity, which have functions that general symbols do not have, and can show human emotions. The emotion expressed by art is the emotion in a broad sense, the common emotional experience of human beings, which is objective and non symptomatic.Art form is abstract,it gets rid of the daily function and has thecharacteristic of "otherness" which is divorced from reality.Art form is logically similar to dynamic emotion, and emotion is an integral part of life activities.Art is the projection of human inner life, which conveys the inexpressible and familiar feeling. The third chapter combs the changes of the meaning of "form" from ancient Greece to the 20 th century. In the 20 th century, the connotation of "form" has been diversified.Russian formalism,British and American new criticism and structuralism focus on the content, language and structure of literature and art.Bell formalism includes the expression of emotion "significance" is the original emotion hidden behind the form.It is in order to understand this special aesthetic emotion,so the art form must be pure.In Langer, emotion and form are unified.Art expresses emotion, and the reason why art can express emotion is that they have the same logical form, which is the result of art abstraction and better expression of emotion. There are obvious differences between Bell's and Langer's research methodology and theoretical perspective, but they have achieved theoretical consistency in how to reproduce the inner feelings of human beings.Starting from the artistic form, this paper discusses the concrete meaning of "form" in Bell and Langer's theory. They emphasized the subjectivity of art.Their attention to art forms is actually to make their inner feelings better expressed. They pay attention to the inner world of the subject, hoping to make people get spiritual sublimation and free aesthetic enjoyment in the field of art.
