This report is based on the translation of chapter one to chapter three in German Boy,a memoir by Wolfgang W.E.Samuel.The translation is aimed to expose more Chinese readers to the tragic experience of the Germans in the aftermath of WW Ⅱ.German Boy records the author’s real experience in the war years and reflects the dark history of Nazi Germany. The memoir has vivid characters, the plot with many twists and turns and detailed descriptions.During the translation, how to analyze the text style and then convey it to the readers of the target text are the main problems to solve. To this end,the translator adopts Liu Miqing’s Style Translation Theory as the theoretical framework of this report. The Style Translation Theory was proposed by the Chinese scholar Liu Miqing in 1990,providing a relatively complete and systematic theoretical framework for style translation. The theory believes that literary style can be analyzed with formal markers(including phonological markers, registerial markers, lexical markers, syntactic markers, textual markers and markers of figures of speech)and non-formal markers(including the pattern of expression, thoughts and sentiments of the literary work, the spiritual temperament of the writer and reader’s response). And Liu believes that style is translatable. The three style-analysis-based methods, corresponding, recasting, and decolouring or generalizing can be used for appropriate processing to achieve text style transference. The report is divided into five parts. The first chapter and the second chapter introduce the translation task and the translation process, respectively. Then the third chapter is the theoretical framework that specifies Liu Miqing’s Style Translation Theory in this report. The fourth chapter is an essential one,in which the translation of German Boy is analyzed in detail under the guidance of the theory. The last chapter is the conclusion of the report with translation experience and limitations. It is hoped that this report can provide some references for further translation practice in the translation of memoir. |
