Although discourse cohesion is a significant theory in linguistics,it is of great guiding significance to translation practice as well.Because each part of a text is linked together by various cohesive devices, whether or not the information to be expressed in the target text can be understood or accepted by readers will depend on cohesive devices. The book History of Chinese Modern Translation Thought is an academic piece written by Wang Bingqin that describes the thought development of Chinese translation. While translating its various excerpts, the author of this report has noticed many similarities and differences between cohesive devices from English and Chinese.Although common cohesive devices in English also exist in Chinese, linguistic disparities and a different style of thinking determine that the translator should flexibly apply cohesive devices that conform to the habits of the target language.Halliday and Hasan divide cohesive devices into grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. In the process of summing up this translation practice, the translator found that grammatical cohesion is used more frequently,so this report focuses on the analysis of cases in which reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction in grammatical cohesion are used to achieve textual coherence.Discourse coherence is the ultimate goal of a translation and the application of various devices is an effective way to achieve it.Therefore,it is of great practical significance to study several cohesive devices inorder to guide the smoothness and coherence of texts in translation work.
