The Influence Of Emotion Valence On Altruistic Behavior After Ego Depletion Abstract

Self control is one of the core functions of the individual,but it is not constant,restricted to self control resources,lack of self control resources of the state is called ego depletion.Ego depletion can weaken and even cause the failure of self-control,caused a lot of negative effects for the individual behavior.Many studies have found that ego depletion will reduce altruistic behavior,but there are few studies explored the relationship between ego depletion and altruistic behavior tendency,in order to further understand the internal mechanisms of ego depletion working on altruistic behavior,this study tested the relationship between the self-control ability and altruistic behavior tendency,explored the influence of ego depletion on altruistic behavior tendency and altruistic behavior level combined with the two-stage model of self-control.In addition,in order to reduce the negative impact of ego depletion,this study also induced different emotions valence(positive/negative/neutral emotions)by music,to explore whether it can influence altruistic behavior tendency and altruistic behavior level of the depleted.This study consists of three parts.Study 1 used questionnaire to measure the self-control ability and altruistic behavior tendency of the subjects,so as to test the relationship between self-control ability and altruistic behavior tendency,as well as the prediction degree of each dimension factor of self-control to the subjects’ altruistic behavior tendency.Study 2 used one-factor between-subjects experimental design,through Stroop task manipulated ego depletion,and the subjects’ altruistic behavior tendency was measured by questionnaire,the Dictator Game was used to measure the altruistic behavior level,so as to explore the influence of ego depletion on the altruistic behavior tendency and altruistic behavior level.Study 3 also used one-factor between-subjects experimental design,the Stroop task was used to manipulate ego depletion.After all subjects accepted ego depletion,different emotions(positive/negative/neutral emotions)were induced by music,to explore whether emotional valence influence altruistic behavior tendency and altruistic behavior level of the depleted.The final research results are as follows:(1)There is a significant positive correlation between self-control ability and altruistic behavior tendency,The stronger the self-control ability is,the higher the altruistic behavior tendency is.(2)All dimensions of self-control can significantly predict the altruistic behavior tendency,and the impulsive behavior dimension has the highest degree to predict the altruistic behavior tendency.(3)Ego depletion can separate altruistic behavior level from altruistic behavior tendency,it reduces altruistic behaviorslevel,but has no effect on altruistic behavior tendency.(4)The effect of emotion valence on the level of altruistic behavior and the tendency of altruistic behavior was separated.Negative emotion could significantly increase the level of altruistic behavior of the depleted,but had no significant effect on the tendency of altruistic behavior.Positive emotion had no significant effect on the level of altruistic behavior and the tendency of altruistic behavior.
