Audiovisual work of popular science is the combination of popular science and audiovisual work.Video,as the major form of audiovisual work,is currently gaining more and more popularity.Accordingly, popular science video,as the major form of audiovisual work of popular science,is also increasingly becoming a vital channel for popular science dissemination. With the development of the Internet and closer connection in science and popular science internationally, more and more foreign audiovisual works of popular science have been translated into Chinese by fansub groups.Although the quantity of translation has been increasing year by year, some translations however, are of rather low quality. As most subtitle translation researches on audiovisual works are focused on movie entertainment field, the theory and practice of subtitle translation of popular science are still at a preliminary stage. Thus it is of great necessity to conduct further research on subtitle translation of popular science.Exurbla is a famous programme of popular science from a foreign video-sharing platform. From this programme the present author chose 6 popular science videos as the original texts for translation, which covers physics, biology, etc. With a plain yet professional content and comical style, the selected material can well represent the characteristics of audiovisual works of popular science.Based on Relevance Theory, the present thesis analyses the English-Chinese subtitle translation of Exurbla programme from the aspects of processing effort and contextual effect. The thesis firstly describes the pre-translation preparation, translation process, and post-translation work of the translation practice, putting special emphasis on the analysis of the characteristics of audiovisual works of popular science and the requirements of popular science subtitle translation. Then the Relevance Theory by Gutt is introduced, with such key concepts as Ostensive-inferential process and context elaborated.Taking his translation practice as a case study, the author explored some translation strategies, methods, and techniques that can be applied in popular science subtitle translation from the perspective of Relevance Theory. It can be found from the current research that in subtitle translation of popular science, translation methods under Foreignization strategy such as zero translation and literal translation methods are mostly used in rendering scientific terminologies and concepts in order to make the translation accurate, professional, and expressive. As for idioms and slang expressions, liberal translation and imitation methods under Domestication strategy are often more applicable in that they can provide adequate contextual effect.Various translation techniques such as addition, omission, and shift should also be flexibly and appropriately employed in an effort to make the translation concise, understandable, and interesting. It’s hoped that this research can help deepen the understanding of the characteristics of audiovisual works of popular science and how they can be translated,as well as provide a reference for the translation of audiovisual works of popular science.
