Accounting for 60%in the college entrance examinations,reading comprehension is actually the most significant part in the English examination.Therefore,for students,improving their reading ability is the key to higher scores in the examination.No doubt teachers should pay more attention to the teaching of reading and tries to improve their teaching efficiency.However,in the present author 's school,classes are relatively large and students vary in their English level,which is actually common in other schools in Tianjin.In her teaching,the present author notices the conflict between the teaching environment and the current teaching mode that prevents the optimization of teaching efficiency.To combat this problem,she proposes that graded teaching be applied in the teaching of English reading.Though graded teaching and its application have been studied a lot in recent years,somehow it it has been rarely been applied by teachers in Tianjin.In order to explore the possibility of its application in the teaching environment of Tianjin,the present author carried out a 4-month contrastive teaching experiment,based on the achievements of previous scholars.She chose two of the classes she taught respectively as experiment and control classes.In the experiment class,graded teaching was carried out in the teaching of English reading while in the control class all the students were taught in the same way at the same level.After the experiment,the two classes' scores for their reading comprehension part in their final English examination were compared to see if there are differences between the classes.Also,a questionnaire survey was done in the experiment class to find out the changes in their study motivation,interest and method,and their opinions about graded teaching.Through this study,the following conclusions can be reached:firstly,compared with teaching the whole class at one level,graded teaching can help improve students' reading ability more effectively;secondly,the graded teaching can help students in different groups to make progress in English reading;thirdly,graded teaching can facilitate students' interest and motivation and strengthen their confidence in English study.
