Critical reading is the foundation of critical writing and an important way to develop critical thinking. It has become a popular topic in educational and academic circles in recent years in China. The translation practice is based on the translation of the book Critical Reading Across the Curriculum: Humanities which introduces the concept of critical reading, the steps of critical reading, the relationship between critical reading and writing and how the critical reading is applied to humanities. This book is an academic work with strong instructive significance and applicability, and it is hoped that the translation of the book will bring some enlightenment to the development and study of critical reading skills and critical thinking in China. As an informative text, the book is featured with formal words and complicated sentences, which requires the translator to assign importance to target readers' understanding and reception of the text in translation. The translation report is based on the translation of the first two chapters of the book.Under the guidance of communicative translation, the translator discusses the translation methods of English long sentences and parallel structures with specific examples in translation practice. The translation of long sentences is discussed in two aspects: translation of long sentences with parenthesis elements and translation of long sentences with embedded modifiers and clauses. For the former one,the translator adopts methods of replacing English dashes with Chinese brackets and shifting sentence order. The skills of embedding, division, inversion and combination are used to deal with the latter one.Translation of parallel structures contains lexical level, phrasal level and clausal level. The translator mainly uses four-character structures, amplification and repetition in the translation of parallel structures. The translation report consists of four parts: introduction, task process, case analysis and conclusion. The first part briefly introduces the background of the task, contents and features of the source text, structure, purpose and significance of the report. The second part describes three steps of translation: pre-translation process, translation process and post-translation process. The third part analyzes translation difficulties and their solutions with specific examples.Guided by the communicative translation theory, the translator discusses the translation methods of English long sentences and parallel structures. The last part summarizes the translator's finding and the shortage during translation. It is hoped that this translation report can provide some reference and enlightenment for the translation of the same type of texts in the future.
