In recent decades, under the strategic leadership of the CPC,the great majority of the Chinese people have witnessed massive improvements in the living standards. This has enabled citizens to focus more on the quality of life issues such as mental health.Given that western research on mental health boasts a long history and some fruitful results,in the future, there is likely to be greater cooperation between China and foreign countries in the mental health field;thus,it is an arena that will be of increasing importance for Chinese interpreters to navigate with confidence. This report was devised to analyze the consecutive interpreting processes involved in an episode entitled Managing Mental Health at Work from a program called Insight produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation(the ABC)Theoretically, this study largely utilizes Interpretive Theory as its main theoretical tool with which to approach this interpreting task.Conceived in France,Interpretive Theory is both one of the most influential interpretive theories in the west and a significant theory in China's interpreting teaching and practice.Focusing on expressing communicative meaning rather than literal meaning,Interpretive Theory advocates that interpreters need to move seamlessly through three phases, viz.,comprehension, deverbalization and reformulation in interpretive exercisesThis report mainly elaborates on the difficulties encountered in this interpreting task and solutions the interpreter adopted in order to cope with those difficulties. The difficulties encountered in this interpreting task centered around how to effectively deal with issues of redundancy, incomplete sentences, disjointed sentences and English idioms.Under the guidance of Interpretive Theory, four solutions, viz.,omission, amplification, sentence reorganization and paraphrasing, are effectively utilized with the aim of solving the aforementioned difficulties With the assistance of these interpreting strategies, the interpreter manages to deliver the interpretation of this task in a faithful, concise and intelligible way.It is sincerely hoped that this report can be conducive to other interpreters' interpreting practices in the field of mental health and may provide some insightful and useful ideas regarding effective interpreting strategies to be adopted in a live-to-air,unscripted,television program scenario.
