A Study On English Teachers' Code-Switching In Senior High School

As a special language phenomenon,code-switching is of great significance to classroom teaching.In the English classroom in our country,teachers' code-switching refers to the teachers' alternating use of English and Chinese in class.In today's educational environment,the phenomenon of teachers' alternating use of English and Chinese in English classes is widespread.However,if teachers can use code-switching properly in the classroom,it can not only make the students learn the scientific and cultural knowledge better,but also benefit the improvement of the students' language learning effect.The author conducted a survey on teachers'code-switching in senior high school English classroom,mainly using questionnaires,interviews,and classroom observation and recordings these three research methods to explore the following three research questions:1)what is the frequency of teachers' code-switching in high school English classroom?2)what are the teachers' and students' attitudes towards the phenomenon of teachers' code-switching in English classroom?3)what are the functions of teachers' code-switching in senior high school English classroom?It is found that teachers' code-switching is common in senior high school English classroom,and the frequency of teachers' code-switching is different in different grades,as well as in different teaching situations.Most teachers and students have a positive attitude towards teachers' code-switching,and think it is helpful for students'English learning.In addition,through qualitative analysis,the author divides the functions of teachers' code-switching into three categories:teaching function,classroom management function and interpersonal relations function.The teaching function can be divided into five aspects:explanation,clarification,asking questions,emphasis and checking for comprehension.And the interpersonal relations function is mainly classified into two parts:enlivening classroom atmosphere and drawing students' attention.In short,these three major functions serve the healthy development of teaching.Based on the research findings above,the following implications are drawn:1)teachers should treat the code-switching used in class rationally and objectively;2)teachers should use the code-switching moderately;3)teachers themselves should strive to improve their own English professional level,especially speaking ability.
