With the gradual deepening of economic globalization, international exchanges among countries in the economy, culture, and politics have become increasingly frequent. As a kind of soft power, culture has been attached great importance nowadays. The Chinese government actively encourages international cultural exchanges. The translation of literary works coincides with the national Cultural export strategy. At present, there have been several translation versions of some Chinese classics, but few translators are interested in many good contemporary literary works. Therefore, the importance of accurate translation of contemporary literary works is self-evident.There is no shortage of good stories in China. What is missing is the ways and means of spreading Chinese stories.English translation of Chinese local stories is a good way to promote Chinese stories to the world.Rice Field in the Sky is a collection of short stories written by Wei Ya,who is a Chinese contemporary original literary writer. In the book, the author has built a small town in Hunan Province and created a group of craftsmen in this town.He described different traditional Chinese craftsmen(such as barber, stonemason, etc.)in each short story and their spirit of craftsman. In the process of urbanization, these traditional jobs nearly disappeared, and accordingly, their unique craftsmanship spirits are almost forgotten by people. The ecology of the town was gradually destroyed, and people’s living conditions and psychological state have undergone great changes.By describing their stories, the author expresses his nostalgia and warmth for the people and things in the town. The purpose of the author’s translation and research is to promote the export of Chinese culture. The stories embody the traditional Chinese thought of harmonious coexistence and show the industrious image of the plain Chinese laboring people.Based on the purpose of cultural export, the author carries out the first translation of Rice Field in the Sky under the guidance of the Skopos theory proposed by Hans Vermeer.Under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos theory, which are skopos rule, coherence rule, and fidelity rule, this paper studies the C-E translation of short stories collection Rice Field in the Sky(excerpts)and analyzes the readability and acceptability of the translated versions form the linguistic features and cultural connotations by comparing examples, and explores some strategies for the translation of contemporary Chinese local novels.Skopos theory is widely used in practical stylistic translation. This paper finds that skopos theory is also applicable to literary translation and can provide some guidance for E-C translation of Chinese local novels. The translator can choose the appropriate translation strategy flexibly according to the guidance of the three principles.
