Nowadays,China has obviously become one of the economic leading roles in the world;however,in cultural exchanges with western countries,China is unfortunately a deficit country, especially in literary translation.China's import of western literature is far more than the export of Chinese literature. Moreover, even in translating Chinese literature, translators usually adopt domestication translation strategies. This sort of cultural deficit not only can affect the transmission of profound Chinese culture brimful in the literary works, but also can endanger the heritage and development of China's own culture. Thus,in terms of exporting classic literary works,it is very important to choose scientific translation theory as guideline and some reasonable translation strategies as tools in order to transmit the source culture. As a prominent representative of ancient popular literature,Stories to Awaken the World, contains a large amount of cultural information, including Confucianism culture,Buddhism culture,Daoism culture, historical culture, street culture, material culture, system culture, ecological culture, etc.,which is the crystallization of the Chinese nation's collective experience and wisdom from generation to generation as well as part of Chinese nation's advanced culture. To transfer the abundant cultural information in Stories to Awaken the World to TL readers, without a scientific translation theory as a guide, the translation quality could be questionable. As for cultural translation,Susan Bassnett has a brilliant insight. Her cultural translation theory holds that, the translation unit should be changed into culture from the widely accepted text;translation is never a pure language activity and it is deeply rooted in the culture where the language exists;translation is both an inter-cultural communication and an intra-cultural communication;the equivalence of translation is the equivalence of the cultural functions between source text and translated text.Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory has a profound theoretical and instructional significance for cultural translation. Therefore, this thesis studies the translation strategies of cultural information in Stories to Awaken the World by Shuhui Yang and Yunqin Yang from the perspective of Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory.First,it gives a brief introduction to the development, contents and significance of Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory. Then,it analyzes Xingshi Hengyan the source text and Stories to Awaken the World the translated version.Next,it divides the cultural information in Stories to Awaken the World into six categories: material culture, ecological culture, religious culture, system culture, social customs and historical allusions.Next, from the perspective of Susan Bassnett's cultural translation theory,it analyzes and summarizes the 11 translation strategies adopted by these two translators. Then,it concludes when translating the cultural information in Stories to Awaken the World, the translators are faithful to the source culture and meanwhile take into account the needs of TL readers.Besides,it also shows that Susan Bassnett's cultural view can be used not only as a criterion for evaluating the translation of cultural information, but also can effectively guide the translation of cultural information.
