Kappa is an excellent work that shows Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s ideological dilemma.Akutagawa’s novel Kappa shows the distressed process in his late period and the contradictory thoughts that followed. To some extent,it reflects Akutagawa himself. It is one of the most important works to understand Akutagawa.Judging from the dilemma of religious thought,Akutagawa has a strong interest in religion but is skeptical of religion. The "living worship" in Kappa states advocates timely enjoyment and lively life. The "living worship" proposed by Akutagawa is the result of thinking about religious issues and lifestyles. The emergence of "living worship" can be explained by hedonism, existentialism, and nihilism and the late decadence character of Akutagawa. In the end,Akutagawa rejected "living worshipt",and Akutagawa hoped to be liberated through religion, but in the end his attention on religion ended in failure.Rather than denying religion,he described the despair of religion. From the perspective of the dilemma of love and marriage, the description of the female Kappa reflects Akutagawa’s despise of women, and considers female vanity, cruelty and coquettishness;the description of the Kappa family shows his irony about the family system and family marriage, but he couldn’t abandon it.His description of marriage and love can be gleaned from the description in Kappa and his essays, comments, and questions and answers: Akutagawa believes that marriage choices are accidental and non-absolutely correct. He prefers women who are feminine and possessing the image of traditional women, the attitude of his love and marriage is pessimistic and lacks morality.Akutagawa Ryunosuke had tried, and failed,to find meaning in marriage and courtship. From the perspective of the dilemma of artistic thought, the comparison between Kurabak and Lok who are musicians in Kappa shows the artistic distress of Akutagawa.Akutagawa acknowledges that he is talented in knowledge and sensibility, but he is skeptical of his own art.He promotes works and writers full of "the spirit of poetry";In Kappa,Akutagawa talked about the art supremacy. He tended to art for art in the early stage, but later changed to art for life.In the end,his attitude towards art was still contradictory and he didn’t draw his own conclusion. The reflection of Akutagawa on art reflects his conscience, hard work and patience. He is a successful literary artist.Kappa contains Akutagawa’s views on many issues,it is a work of social criticism that elicits the reader’s sympathy and ridicule reflects Akutagawa’s images and ideas in many ways, and the allegorical novel is filled with skepticism and despair of Akutagawa Ryunosuke.
