| Style is an important characteristic of literary works.Due to the obscurity of style and the huge linguistic and cultural differences among different countries, whether style is recognizable and translatable remains a debatable issue in the translation circle. Now most scholars tend to agree that style is translatable, but the obscurity and subjectivity of style makes it difficult to reproduce the style of the original in translation. To solve this problem, renowned translation theorist Liu Miqing proposed the style translation theory, stating that style is recognizable and translatable. He developed the stylistic markers theory and divided stylistic markers into two categories, formal markers and non-formal markers. He tried to study style with a scientific and objective approach and put forward three methods to reproduce style in translation, which provides guidelines for style translation practices.Toni Morrison is regarded as a master of literature in contemporary America.Beloved is considered one of her greatest works. Her poetic expression, unique narration and expert use of figures of speech show the high artistic value of her works.Beloved has been translated into Chinese twice. It was first translated by Wang Youxuan and later by Pan Yue and Lei Ge.The two translations have their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of style reproduction. The thesis analyzes the results of style reproduction in the two Chinese versions of Beloved on the basis of the style translation theory, and tries to find out feasible methods for style translation and deficiencies of the theory. The thesis hopes to serve as a supplement to the research of Morrison’s style and provide help for the theoretical research and practices of style translation. |
