A Study On Cohesion In Consecutive Interpretation From Metafunction Theory Of Systemic Functional Linguistics

The logic greatly affects the quality of interpretation,and proper textual cohesion can significantly improve logic.There are vast differences in the use of cohesion between English and Chinese,so the research on cohesion in interpretation is worth studying in-depth.Three questions have been raised in this thesis.Where is the difference in discourse cohesion between Chinese and English? In the consecutive interpretation,what effect does the cohesion of the source language have on the target language?Can any feasible strategies be summarized? This thesis analyzes the interpretation record of Premier Li's press conference during the two sessions in 2019.From three aspects of metafunction: interpersonal function,ideational function and textual function,the thesis compares the use of cohesion between the original text and the interpretation,and finally put forward four suitable strategies.The most significant difference between English and Chinese on cohesion is that English depends on the high frequency of specific cohesion devices while Chinese prefer logical cohesion,which is implicit in discourse.However,the thesis found that in interpretation,considering the requirement of fluency and time limits,the interpreter does not merely process Chinese cohesion as implicit or English cohesion directly as explicit.Rather,the cohesion in the target language has to refer to the cohesion in the source language,which means that the cohesion in target language might follow that in the source language both in form and meaning.For example,from the perspective of interpersonal function,the target language will retain the tone and voice of the source language.Sometimes considering the language habits,the cohesion of the target language might be inconsistent with the source language.For example,the theme-rheme concept mentioned in the textual function does not correspond precisely from English grammar to Chinese grammar.Therefore,taking the requirements of interpersonal function,textual function and ideational function into consideration,the thesis proposes four strategies,namely preservation,addition,omission,and replacement,hoping to provide some help to the interpreter to guarantee the quality and smoothness of the interpretation.
