| Since the Industrial Revolution,a large number of environmentally contaminated problems have emerged in the world,such as global warming,soil erosion,freshwater degradation,resource depletion,deforestation,desertification and other problems.Thus the speech on environmental protection emerges as a medium of communication and interaction between the addresser and the addressees.The thesis,based on Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL),illustrates a discourse analysis of the realization of interpersonal metafunction in speech on environmental protection of the UN.Halliday departmentalizes the function of language as three metafunctions,namely ideational metafunction,interpersonal metafunction and textual metafunction.In virtue of the nature of speech,the interpersonal function is more prominent to incarnate the meaning of speech.Therefore,the thesis selects ten speeches on environmental protection from the UN as its research corpus,applying the mood,modality and person systems to the contribution to the realization of interpersonal function in the speeches on environmental protection.The analytical results reveal that,in mood system,the declarative mood constitutes the larger proportion of total,followed by imperative and interrogative mood types.The positive declarative mood dominates the complete speech with the aim of stating or questioning some information about the environmental issues.Simultaneously,the metaphor of mood could express the speech function in an indirect way,making the speech more tolerable and acceptable.In modality system,initially,probability has been the most frequently adopted one in modality type,expressing the potential possibility and reducing arbitrariness and absoluteness of speech.Secondly,the modal operator with median value takes up the largest proportion to unfold the moderate expressions,followed by low and high values.The operator with low value is less assertive and creates an objective atmosphere,while that with high value reveals the addresser's determination to complete some assignments,adding a sense of trust for addressees.Thirdly,in terms of modality orientation,the addresser has an inclination to emphasize a statement with implicitly subjective orientation,meaning that the subjective points of view are voiced by addresser in animplicit approach,which is suitable for the addressees to understand and agree with the speech content.Lastly,the speech on environmental protection is oriented by positive polarity,whose purpose is to give people an impression of being effective,active and attractive.In person system,the plural first personal pronoun “we” has the largest occupation,commenting on numerous functions such as maintaining a great relation with the addressees or mobilizing the publics to protect the environment.The third person presents the objectivity of speech,while the second holds the smallest proportion,building up a dialogue and promoting the mutual communication and interaction.The person system is usually integrated with parallelism to enhance the expressive effect of language in the speech.The thesis broadens the research scope of SFL to a certain extent,also furnishing both addresser and addressees with some suggestions.For addresser and designer of speech,the thesis analyzes how to utilize appropriate linguistic elements to design and publish a speech on environmental protection,enhancing the interpersonal meaning of the speech.For the addressees,it's beneficial for listeners to comprehend the intention of speech,to recognize autonomously the ideological operation in the text,to improve their ability to identify and read relevant information,and to take measures to protect the environment.Certainly,the thesis has some limitations;it offers some advisable food for thought of SFL in speech on environmental protection. |
