Abstract/Summary:
China carries a big weight in international maritime affairs with the booming development of shipping industry. Therefore, the translation quality of maritime documents is of vital importance. The translation practice report is based on the online encyclopedia Encyclopedia of Ship Technology, which is related to the types of ships, ship structures, onboard equipment and devices, onboard safety and maintenance,as well as shipping rules and relevant regulations. In the process of translation, there are great deals of metaphorical expressions. The accuracy of the metaphor translation is crucial to the interpretation of the original text. Thus the emphasis of this report lies on the translation strategies that make the original text and the translated text corresponded in terms of contents and forms.Five types of metaphors are involved in the translation report, which are related to the animals, the colours, the parts of the body, human features or animal features, and object features.Guided by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics, the focuses of this report are on the translation strategies of metaphor appearing in Maritime English.Adopting the research methods of the case study and experimental summarization, the translation strategies of metaphor appearing in the text are concluded as:maintaining the vehicles, transferring the vehicles, and abandoning the vehicles. For those conventionalized vocabularies in Maritime English, the traditional translation methods are directly followed. The purpose of the translation report is to overcome the obstacles and provides some reference for the translation of maritime documents in the future.
