Research On The Choson’s Military Build-up In The Negotiations Period Of The Imjin War

In April of the 20th year(1592)of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty,Hideyoshi Toyotomi sent troops to invade the Choson dynasty,and the Imjin war broke out.The Choson dynasty collapsed in a few months because of its weak military power.The Choson dynasty was forced by the war condition to ask military aid from the Ming Dynasty.Emperor Wanli appointed Song Yingchang and Li Rusong as the top officers of the Ming army to rescue the Choson dynasty.After the Ming army won the battle of Pyongyang,it was defeated in the Pyokchegwan.The war was at a stalemate,and the peace negotiations began.At the same time,Song Yingchang planned to station part of the Ming Dynasty’s troops in the Choson dynasty to stabilize the situation.Later,Song Yingchang inspected the defense condition of the Choson dynasty and proposed military build-up measures for the Choson dynasty,such as building castles and strategically important places,making more firearms,and selecting and training soldiers.He hoped that Choson dynasty could strengthen its national defense forceThe formulation and participation of the Ming Dynasty in the military build-up of the Choson dynasty marked a new stage of the military cooperation between the two countries.The study of the military build-up of the Choson dynasty in the negotiations period will help us to understand the specific content of the relationship between the Ming Dynasty and the Choson dynasty,that is,how the Ming Dynasty resolved the crisis and protects the national security of the Choson dynasty.This study can also examine the friendship and friction between the two countries through of the military cooperation.Therefore,by studying the historical records of Ming Dynasty and the Choson dynasty,this dissertation clarifies the whole process of the proposal,implementation and effects of the Choson dynasty’s military build-up,to examine the relationship between Ming Dynasty and the Choson DynastyAfter combing the whole process of the Choson dynasty’s military build-up during the negotiations period of the imjin war,it could be found in this dissertation that the targeted military build-up measures proposed by the Song Yingchang attracted the attention of Choson dynasty.Through the cooperation between the two countries,the military build-up made some achievements in soldiers’ training,castles building and other aspects.These achievements contributed to the defense of the Japan’s second invasion of Choson and coping with the aftermath of the Japan’s second invasion of Choson,they had profound influence to Choson’s development after the war.However,due to the poor national power,the low administrative efficiency,the different understanding between Ming and Choson,the military build-up of Choson did not achieve expected effects.In the Japan’s second invasion of Choson,Choson still needed a lot of assistance from the Ming army.To examine the Choson’a military build-up in the context of bilateral relations,we can find that Choson hoped that the Ming Dynasty could help them on a large scale in the imjin war.At this time,the involvement of the Ming Dynasty in Choson affairs was in an abnormal state.Once the war ended,the Ming Dynasty’s involvement in Choson affairs needed to return to normal and restore the independence of Choson.After the beginning of the military build-up,the Ming army gradually reduced its participation in the defense affairs of the Choson,and the Choson did not want the Ming Dynasty to interfere in its affairs as well.Choson’s military build-up reflected this transitional state of relations between the two countries.
