| This thesis will investigate the evolution process of Qing-Choson relations in the context of empire-building and transition, including the foundation of envoys system, diplomatic correspondence, and frontiers between Qing and Choson, and then discuss how these administrative practices in the stage of empire-building and transition influence the Qing government functions. The thesis argues that the evolution process of Qing-Choson relations did exist structural transformation when the Jurchen(Qing’s predecessor)changed from aimans to a united Jurchens’ kingdom, then becoming an empire. For example,at the beginning,Nurgaci signed his name as Jurchens’ king in the letter to the Choson’s local government in borderland; After the establishment of Aisin Gurun(Latter Jin),Nurgaci and his successor Hong Taiji called themselves as Khans;Since the founding of Daicing Gurun(Qing Empire),Hong Taiji and his successors finally became emperors, when dealing with Choson affairs. These terms aboved-mentioned represent transition of Qing Empire. One of the most important changes brought by the transition was the consciousness of a political entity:1.The eager to equal diplomacy,Which caused disagreement between Qing and Choson, and finally lay a foundation for the formation of the Ministry of Rites, the Qing’s diplomatic organ.2.The consciousness of fontier or boundry, had connections with the activities of immigrants and trade happening in the Qing-Choson borderland,Which led to a functional expansion of Qing’s Ministry of Revenue on Qing-Choson relations. This thesis will show how the administrative practices formed a special model on Qing-Choson affairs in the reign of Chongde, the second term of Hong Taiji——the Ministry of Rites and Ministry of Revenue worked on it together——via analysing the processing procedure of official communications among these two ministries and Choson’s government. |
