As the first collection of romantic poetry in Chinese history,Chu Ci has a unique and significant status in the history of Chinese literature. The great patriotic poet Qu Yuan is the main composer of Chu Ci.Created in the kingdom of chu during Warring States Period,Chu Ci is influenced by the local shamanism.Chu Ci presents a variety of unique cultural images, such as herbs, beauties, and gods. The themes in Chu Ci are also diverse, with Li Sao,describing the poet's own encounters,Tian Wen,exploring the mysteries of the universe,Yun Zhong Jun and Dong Huang Tai Yi illustrating the sacrificial ceremony. There are many translations of Chu Ci,and David Hawkes's version is the earliest full-length translation. This thesis intends to analyze Hawkes's translation of Chu Ci from the perspective of Image-G actualization theoryImage-G refers to the gestalt image. The concept of image-G is derived from the concept of Gestalt psychology.Mary-snell Hornby proposes that the wholeness of gestalt psychology could be applied to the study of literary translation. The theory is put forward by Professor Jiang Qiuxia in her monograph that emphasizes the reproduction of gestalt quality in the original text. This thesis attempts to explore the reconstruction of Gestalt images in Hawkes's version of Chu Ci.This thesis classifies the images in Chu Ci,namely:images of event, images of character, images of scene and images of emotion expression. At the same time, since the translation process is also a cognitive process, this thesis applies theories of cognitive translation studies and summarizes the cognitive translation strategies used in Hawkes's translation, including image preservation, image highlighting, and image renewalThe thesis finds that Hawkes's translation has completed the actualization of the four kinds of gestalt images in Chu Ci.The aesthetic experience and the meaning of the original text have been reproduced. From the perspective of cognitive translation studies, the choice of cognitive translation strategy affects the expression effect of image-G actualization. In Hawkes's translation, preservation of image, highlight of image, and renewal of image are the main cognitive translation strategies.Under the guidance of cognitive strategies, translators use different translation methods to reproduce the gestalt quality of the original text. The process of literary translation is the process of image-G actualization.A successful translation should achieve the complete image-G actualization,to which the key is whether the translator can choose the correct cognitive translation strategy.
