Many Chinese as a second language students believe that one of the most difficult parts of learning Chinese is the study of Chinese characters. As a result, many questions have been put forward inquiring into the reasons for this, such as what sort of cognitive processes do their minds undergo as they are recognizing characters?Do these processes have any relation to radicals? How can radicals assist students with learning how to recognise, write, recall and learn new characters? Many people recognise that it is within our ability to use radicals in order to study characters. In fact, several researchers have shown that having radical awareness, can reduce the errors that Chinese as a second languagestudents produce when using characters. They have also shown that it can assist in the improvement of these students' reading and writing skills, and help them to generally improve their overall usage of the language. As a result, the main objective of this thesis is to explore and analyse the function of radicals in the studies of Chinese as a second language learners. This thesis mainly seeks to:(1)explore the relationship between Chinese as a second language learners' Chinese studies and the grasping of Chinese radicals.(2)explore the question of how the study of Chinese radicals can help CFL students improve their Chinese language studies.(3)explore whether or not one can effectively establish a well-rounded research towards responding to the following questions:(a)How can an individual select the Chinese radicals which are to be learned?(b)In what ways do the selected Chinese radicals impede the studies of Chinese as a second language learners?(c)In what ways do the selected Chinese radicals assist CFL students with their Chinese language studies?...
