A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of The Comment Column In The New Yorker From The Perspective Of Thematic Progression Theory

News commentary is comment on significant current events and social phenomena which usually provides through analysis through logical reasoning.This report is based on a translation project conducted by the author.The source texts are news commentaries from “The Talk of the Town” column of The New Yorker,a famous American weekly magazine and cover a wide variety of topics including gun control,racial discrimination,and climate change etc.As an important tool for discourse analysis,the thematic structure reflects the writer's train of thoughts which can help readers better understand the gist.When it comes to English-Chinese translation,on the one hand,the thematic structure of the source text should be kept the same in the translation,on the other,it should be adjusted according to the characteristics of the Chinese language.Based on Halliday's theory on theme-rheme,this report analyzes the change of thematic structure from the source text to the translation and tries to find a regular pattern thus providing guidance for later news commentary translating.This report consists of four chapters.Chapter one is the translation project introduction including a general description of the project and characteristics of the source text.Chapter two presents the translation process-pre-translation preparation,while-translation and post-translation improvement.Chapter three is the case study including the theoretic framework,analyzing processes and results.and the final chapter draws a conclusion including the findings and limitations of this project.
