Thematic progression is a good way to reflect the development of discourse. And contrastive analysis is considered an effective means to promote the linguistic study. So this thesis aims to do a contrastive analysis on Chinese and English sports news in newspapers based on the framework of thematic progression. The thesis applies M. A. K. Halliday's thematic structure and many linguists'patterns of thematic progression to quantitative contrast of Chinese and English written sports news. After analysis, we find that the T– T pattern predominates with the highest percentage both in Chinese and English, the R– T pattern comes next, and the generalizing patterns cover the lowest percentage in the two languages. The difference between the two languages is the use of T– R pattern and R– R pattern. We also find that the main reason for the similarities is the same style and writing principles; the reason for the differences is the different language features. At last, we apply the results to the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language, and offer several teaching methods about reading and writing. |
