Human nature has two sides,so does the state.More than 100 years ago,on the eve of American Civil War,President Abraham Lincoln appealed to all Americans for“better angels of our nature” in order to avoid all hatred and wars.A century later, the American government, especially the one represented by President Donald trump, has been inciting hatred and fear, and stirring up the evil side of American society.Against this background,Jon Ellis Meacham,a famous American biographer, wrote the book The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels, which has great research value for domestic readers, especially for historical researchers, and is of far-reaching significance for peaceful coexistence of all countries in the world.During the translation practice, the translator selected and translated the third chapter of the above work and wrote this translation report based on it.Featured with authentic language and rich rhetorical devices, the selected chapter tells the personal life and political experience of Theodore·Roosevelt, the 26 th President of the United States. The report mainly adopts the research method of literature review and analysis of translation cases, classifies those cases into three aspects of vocabulary, sentence and discourse, and discusses corresponding translation skills for different translation difficulties, such as word formation, decomposition of long sentences as well as translation compensation.Through this translation practice, the translator has a deeper understanding of American history and culture, the translation on historical texts, and the linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English. This report is composed of the following four parts: translation task description, translation process description, translation case analysis and translation practice conclusion. The first part introduces the source of translation materials, the introduction to the author, and his works and the significance of the topic. The secondpart includes the preparation before translation, translation difficulties and the final check and polishing. The third part mainly analyzes the selected translation cases from lexical, sentence and textual levels. The last part refers to the conclusion of this translation practice, and briefly expresses the translator's feelings and understandings in this process.
