Throughout the ages, more and more excellent western novels have been translated into Chinese, which has attracted a large number of readers in China. While immersed in the plot, the readers can also learn about the unique outstanding western culture.Carson McCullers, one of the most important American writers of the 20 th century, the novel The Member of a Wedding is considered as her most mature work.Few scholars have studied the two Chinese translation versions of this novel at present. The thesis takes two Chinese translation versions of The Member of the Wedding as the research object, and the Newmark's translation theory as a theoretical guide for its comparative study. The research method mainly used in this thesis is comparative analysis.First of all, this thesis analyzed the description of characters including the description of portrait, language and mental activities. It can be found that Zhou Yujun's translation mainly adopted semantic translation, which is more faithful to the sentence structure and clues of the original text, while Zhou Qian's translation mainly adopted communicative translation, especially in terms of the description of language and mental activity.Zhou Qian is influenced by his native language culture to a certain extent during the translating process and has distinct translation features. In terms of the description of scenery including dynamic and static scenery,Zhou Yujun's translation is faithful to scenery-based expression of the original author, while Zhou Qian's translation method of communicative translation produced some mistranslation.Secondly, this thesis also explores the similarities and differences between the two Chinese translation versions from the aspects of culturally-loaded words, onomatopoeias, and color symbolic words using exemplification. It was found that Zhou Yujun's translation is more accurate in language transmission. In general, some translation errors caused by lacking consideration of the habits of the target language and the character's identity in the novel has been found in the two Chinese versions. The two translators mainly used semantic translation in the translation process, but in terms of cultural differences and the accuracy of languagetransmission,Zhou Yujun's translation achieved a better translation effect, which faithfully and accurately conveys the intention of the original text but also make the target readers easy to understand;and the method adopted by Zhou Qian in these cases is mostly communicative translation and uses footnotes when encountering cultural differences that may lead to misunderstanding.Through comparative analysis,it can be found that no matter semantic translation or communicative translation, which should not be completely separated. In the actual translation process, for expressive texts, the two translation methods should be used in combination, and mainly to use semantic translation so that the intention of the original author can be faithfully and accurately conveyed. At the same time, the thesis can also provide some reference and guidance for cultural exchanges between China and the West, especially in terms of family education during the growth of Chinese female.
