A Translation Report Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

Contemporary social communications industry is developing rapidly,and as a result,human learning and life have undergone tremendous changes.Under the background of globalization,the communication of information technology is becoming more and more important,so the demand for popular science books translation is particularly urgent.The source text of this translation report is from a popular science book entiled Now:The Physics of Time which was published by W.W.Norton&Company in 2016,and its author is Richard A.Muller.Facing the translation of popular science texts,the translator’s first task is to accurately convey the content of the source text.I excerpted a part of the fourth chapter of the book.The selected material mainly introduces a series of problems that perplex pastors,philosophers,and physicists,involving relativity,entropy,quantum physics,antimatter,time travel,the big bang and dark energy.I have encountered many problems in the initial translation.Later,under the guidance of communicative translation theory,combined with the revision suggestions of my instructor,these difficulties were resolved.By summarizing his years of translation practice,Newmark propose communicative translation theory.He believes that the target language readers’ understanding of the translation should be as close as possible to the original language readers’ understanding of the original work.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory and referring to the revision suggestions of my instructor,I tried to break the limitations of the original text and searched for more expressions to create the translation for the convenience of Chinese readers.In specific English-Chinese translation practice,I mainly used translation methods such as word choosing,lexical extension,amplification,cultural consideration,structural adjustment,rewriting,etc.,and finally produced this Chinese version.Through this translation practice,I find that communicative translation theory has a strong guiding significance for the translation of popular science texts.The translator needs to flexibly use a variety of translation techniques and adhere to the communicating strategy when implementing translation practices in order to improve translation quality.In addition,the translation of popular science texts should be easy to understand,so the translator also needs to have a broad knowledge and highly developed writing skills in the Chinese language.
