A Report On E-C Translation Of The First And The Second Chapter In Fashion&Sustainability—Design For Change

Since the Reform and Opening-up of China,the garment trade has been developing rapidly and international exchanges and cooperation have been increasing gradually.In contrast to this prosperity,however,English translation involved in the garment industry is not satisfactory.It can be seen that English translation in the garment industry needs to be highly concerned,because this will directly affect whether this industry can maintain and promote its advantages internationally or not.This translation practice chooses the first and second chapters of Fashion&Sustainabiliry-Design for Change as the research object,focusing on the strategies of translating garment texts from English to Chinese.In order to carry out the translation smoothly,the translator has spent time mastering the basic concepts and knowledge of garment English,and then concluded and summarized its textual features and translation feasibility.Subsequently,this report gives a general overview of the guiding theory-Skopos Theory,including its development and introduction of the three rules.Next,the translator translates the selected text under the three rules of Skopos Theory.On the basis of repeated revisions,this translation practice is reviewed and reflected.At last,the gains and losses in the translation are summarized.The translator found that a successful translation practice should include full preparation before translation,continuous improvement of translation skills and good teamwork spirit Meanwhile,the translator also realized her own shortcomings.First,the translator lacks systematic understanding of the background knowledge about Garment English.Second,the translator does not have practical experience in the garment industry.Finally,the report draws conclusions.First,Skopos Theory is applicable for guiding the translation of Garment English texts.From the perspective of text type,the garment English text belongs to the informative text,with the main purpose of accurately conveying effective information.It is consistent with the idea of Skopos Theory that translation is a purposeful behavior,and the translator's subjective initiative should be emphasized in the translation process,which is also advocated by functional ism.Second,the translator should grasp key points and difficulties in the translation process.Two key points are to ensure the translation accuracy of professional vocabularies and the smoothness of the translation.Two difficulties are as follows.First,there are certain social and cultural differences between Chinese and English.Translators are prone to mistranslation due to the influence of their native expression habits.Second,disconnection between theory and practice is more likely to appear in the translation process.
