Studies have proven that the Q&A sessions are usually much more challenging as they tend to be more spontaneous and unpredictable. This study seeks to uncover the root causes for these interpretation challenges and help interpreters tackle them with more ease. The major difficulties identified in this thesis are as follows.First, with several speakers in the Q&A session,it's almost impossible for the interpreter to get accustomed to their individual speaking styles in advance.Second, interpreters are required to be very accurate so that the communication is able to continue.Third, colloquial language in the Q&A session is not always grammatically correct. This thesis is based on the seminar US-China Relations and the World Order, given by professor Joseph Nye in Oxford,2018.The author found that her interpreting in Q&A was not as complete and accurate as the speech part. Therefore, she tried to improve her interpreting through information selecting and processing tactics. After looking into the difficulties she encountered during the interpretation process, the author came to the conclusion that interpreters may give up background information when necessary. The interpreter's main objective is to grasp the speaker's core intention.Hence,it is suggested to put lower priority on rhetorical devices when they pose as a disturbance for the interpreter's comprehension. In terms of information processing for maximum accuracy during interpretation, interpreters may simplify redundant information and selectively avoid being too specific when they're uncertain with the speaker's intention. In conclusion,it is always better to be vague than to deliver a wrong message.
