| In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter listens to a speech, takes notes and then conveys the speaker’s message in the target language.Notes,as a reminder, can help the interpreter recall the information of the speech. But low effectiveness of note-taking can prevent notes from playing their due role, even making a negative impact on the interpreting performance. This thesis focuses on the low effectiveness of note-taking in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting based on the interpreting of a mock conference of the Long Run NSD Policy Talk. This thesis defines low effectiveness of note-taking and summarizes the major factors that affect the effectiveness. The author explores the reasons for low effectiveness by analyzing the transcriptions and notes and gives improved versions. The analysis shows that low effectiveness of note-taking mainly manifests itself in the forms of missing contents, source language not being fully processed, unclear note structures, low legibility of notes and improper distribution of effort. To cope with the respective issues, the author suggests five coping strategies including optimizing note contents, fully processing source language, improving note structures, enhancing note legibility and proper distribution of effort,in order to improve the effectiveness of note-taking and strengthen the interpreting performance. |
