Fluency is considered as a crucial criterion for assessing the quality of interpreting.A disfluent interpretation may hinder the exchange of information and reveal an interpreter's hesitation.Based on the mock conference on “Professor Joseph Nye at the Oxford Union”,this case study aims to explore the following two questions: 1)What are the contributing factors to different types of disfluencies in English to Chinese consecutive interpreting? 2)What are the solutions to the disfluencies?The disfluencies in this case study are classified into four categories,namely,filled pauses,unfilled pauses,repeats and self-repairs,and then the causes of the disfluencies are discussed.It is concluded three factors lead to the disfluencies: 1)Problematic note-taking strategies.2)Mediocre Chinese-language abilities.3)Insufficient use of interpreting tactics.The thesis provides corresponding suggestions to address each of the problems.1)Optimize note-taking strategies by improving note symbols,stopping taking notes which don't make sense and taking notes in a well-organized way.2)Develop Chinese proficiency by enhancing deverbalization and paraphrasing skill.3)Make full use of interpreting tactics,such as sufficient preparation,self-monitoring and omitting unimportant information when necessary.Disfluencies are inevitable in interpreting,but targeted practice and proper use of interpreting tactics can help interpreters enhance their fluency of delivery.
