The translation of children’s literature has long been the part of tremendous translation activities,but this field has not received enough attention from theorists and publishers,as well as academic institutions involved in the research and training of translation.More and more teachers and parents have been aware of the importance of translation in children’s literature and realized its great significance in the education system to develop a discerning attitude and good reading skills for children in the new era.Therefore,the Publishing House of Jinan initiated a retranslation project of Pinocchio,and the author participated in it.Pinocchio is a classic children’s novel with a worldwide reputation and beneficial for preschool education of children.Consequently,its retranslation plays an imperative role in narrowing the gap in time and culture between the source text and readers of the present day.This report is based on the author’s detailed translation process,including preparation,guiding theory,experience and reflection,to discuss and summarize its stylistic features and translation methods.As a construct of language in literary text,Pinocchio is a multi-dimensional entity,to which various analytic models,each with its given interests,may apply.Stylistics has provided scholars of translation studies with a variety of methodologies to analyze translation from linguistic respect.The author investigates the language styles of Pinocchio to summarize its unique features,such as clear and apparent phonetic features,various graphological features,unique dialogic features as well as coherent discoursal features.On the basis of stylistic theory,this report makes a comparison of the author’s first translation and revised one from phonetic,graphological,pragmatic and cognitive perspectives in order to find out appropriate methods in translation of children’s literature with the help of a linguistic approach.Meanwhile,it is crucial for today’s translators to pay more attention to the needs of young readers and apply proper translation strategies.With a purpose of presenting readers a satisfying translation of Pinocchio,the author makes full preparations to successfully complete the task.This report aims to make a detailed case study of the translation of Pinocchio under the guidance of phonetic,multimodal,pragmatic and cognitive stylistics to improve its accessibility,narrow the gap between the classic work and contemporary readers through translation,and help the classic work of Pinocchio gain popularity among young readers.
