During consecutive interpreting, the interpreter should convey the speaker’s ideas using concise, accurate target language fluently and clearly. However,in reality, due to various factors such as language structural differences, the content of the speech and problems the interpreter encounters, redundancy may appear in the interpretation. It includes heavy expressions, repetition, and a lack of flow in delivery, which can lead to a rather unsatisfactory presentation. The audiences would have to spare extra effort to try to understand and reorganize the information they receive;they could even lose track of or misunderstand the speaker’s core ideas. For the purpose of looking for strategies to avoid redundancy, this thesis takes the speech from the 2016 NSD Policy Talk: Debate on Industrial Policy mock conference and the author’s Chinese-English consecutive interpreting script as analyzing materials. It looks into three typical types of redundancies in the script: fillers, repetitions and inappropriate self-repairs.This thesis compares the two transcripts, reflects on the situation where the author provided the interpretation and looks up for references in relevant literature. It looks at the above three types of redundancies from three aspects: listening,note-taking and delivering, and proposes detailed, tangible strategies accordingly to resolve the problem of redundancy. This thesis hopes that,by analyzing the reasons behind redundancies in the author’s interpretation and by providing specific solutions,it can provide help and reference to fellow researchers and interpreters so as to help with their researches and improve the quality of their deliveries.
