A Research On The Absence Of Chinese Culture In Secondary Vocational School Students' English Learning

In 2000,professor Congcong published an essay in Guangming Daily,which put forward the phenomenon of the absence of Chinese culture.Then scholars started to research the current situation of university students' expression of Chinese culture in English.Many researches have shown that this phenomenon exists in universities.For secondary vocational school students,they also need to learn the English expression of Chinese culture according to the secondary vocational school English syllabus in 2009.Thus,it is significant to research the absence of Chinese culture in secondary vocational schools.The researcher adopts the method of the test,the questionnaire and the interview.In Qingxu Secondary Vocational School,180 students from five classes,sixteen English teachers,English textbooks and the final English test paper are selected as the research subjects.This research mainly explores the following three questions.(1)What is the current situation of the absence of Chinese culture in Qingxu Secondary Vocational School students' English learning?(2)What are the reasons leading to the absence of Chinese culture?(3)What are the solutions of decreasing the absence of Chinese culture?The results show that the absence of Chinese culture exists in Qingxu Secondary Vocational School students' English learning.The main reasons are that some students are not interested in the English expression of Chinese culture,English teachers sometimes ignore the background information of Chinese culture and the contents of Chinese culture are rarely involved in the English textbooks.The questions of Chinese culture are rarely involved in the English test paper.Finally,this thesis puts forward some suggestions on how to improve the students' abilities to express Chinese culture in English.Students should cultivate their interests in the English expression of Chinese culture.Teachers should offer more English expression of Chinese culture in English classes.The editors should increase more contents of Chinese culture in English textbooks.More questions of Chinese culture should be added to the English test paper.The school authorities should offer more atmospheres for students to acquire the English expression of Chinese culture.
