According to the English syllabus for secondary vocational schools,English courses should cultivate students' English application ability in daily life and career,and guide students to understand the differences between Chinese and western culture to cultivate the correct emotion attitude and values.Meanwhile,it should cultivate students' cultural awareness to improve students' moral and cultural accomplishment.Cultural awareness is students' intercultural cognition,attitude and behavior orientation in the context of globalization.Cultural awareness also reflects the value orientation of the core literacy of English subjects.The cultivation of cultural awareness can help students to increase their national identity and family feelings,strengthen cultural self-confidence,and grow into a person with a sense of civilization and social responsibility.However,in the long-term English teaching in China,the cultivation of students' intercultural communication ability by cultural teaching has been widely valued and deeply studied,and the introduction of target language culture has enhanced students' awareness and ability of intercultural communication.But intercultural communication is bidirectional,and native language culture has not been paid enough attention to in English teaching in secondary vocational school.The phenomenon of “Chinese cultural aphasia” is still serious.The concept of “Chinese culture aphasia” is first proposed in the foreign language teaching by Professor Cong(2000)of Nanjing University,which refers to the students who are unable to express or accurately describe the content related to Chinese culture in English in intercultural communication,because of the lack of Chinese culture reserves and low English ability to express Chinese culture.This phenomenon of cultural communication obstacle is “Chinese culture aphasia”.From the perspective of intercultural communication,this paper which is based on intercultural communication theory,cultural schema theory and Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory,investigate the phenomenon of Chinese cultural aphasia,especially in oral communication,among 200 students from civil aviation and high-speed railway majors in Kelu secondary vocational school,Tongliao city,Inner Mongolia.The main study questions are:(1)what is the status quo of Chinese cultural aphasia in secondary vocational school English learning?(2)what are the reasons of students' Chinese cultural aphasia in secondary vocational school English learning? In this paper,test,questionnaire and interview are used to collect data.There are totally 200 questionnaires and 183 of them are valid questionnaires.Then 10 students who are randomly chosen from 200 students are interviewed.Finally,SPSS22.0 is used for statistical analysis of the data.From the test,we find that many students are unable to accurately express their mother tongue culture in English.From multiply choice and translation,we can see students get low marks in Chinese religious,politics,idioms and literature.For some common festivals,food,and tourist attractions,they get a relatively high mark.As for writing,most of students can not write down some simple phrases.It is precisely because the students have insufficient understanding and mastering of Chinese traditional culture,so the average score of the test is less than half of the total score,which also reflects the cultural aphasia is very serious.The questionnaire and the interview further explained the reasons to the “Chinese Culture Aphasia”.First,teachers and students have a positive attitude to Chinese culture,but they do not have a deep understanding of “Chinese Culture Aphasia”.For teaching contents,many teachers put most of their energy in how to make students understand the study of Western culture better,but they have less consideration of Chinese cultural output.This makes students' understanding of foreign cultures even better than their own culture.As for textbooks,compared with the western culture,the proportion of Chinese culture in our textbooks is small.In the subtle,students' acceptance of western culture has become very high,but little is known about their own culture.In addition,students' awareness of intercultural communication should be improved.Much attention has been paid on the college entrance examination,which leads to their incompetence in intercultural communication.This paper makes suggestions from teachers,students,teaching materials,examinations and culture view.This study has important theoretical and practical significance for implementing the requirements of secondary vocational English teaching syllabus,improving secondary vocational English teaching quality and students' ability of intercultural communication to cultivate front-line production talents needed by the society.At the same time,it enriches the theory of intercultural communication and provides a way to improve textbooks.And it also has an important impact on cultivating students' confidence in national culture and spreading Chinese culture to the world.
