Yamazaki Ansai(????,1618-1682),known as the founder of the Kimon School of Syushigaku and Suika Shinto(????),is a representative scholar of Syushigaku(???,Neo-Confucianism of Zhu Xi[??,1130-1200])of the Tokugawa period in Japan, and has a profound influence in the philosophy in Japan history.Taking Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism as an absolute truth,Ansai pays much attention to his conception of jing(?,respect and reverence),as essential to the Syushigaku, and summarizes it as follows:"Noblemen uphold respectfulness internally, and demonstrate righteousness throughout all his actions externally"(????,????).But there is a different understanding between Ansai and Zhu Xi of "nei"(?,internal)and "wai"(?,external).Based on the text of the book Great Learning, the Japanese neo-Confucian Yamazaki Ansai refers the "nei" to things related to "shen"(?,body),and "wai" to "others and things",much d.istinguished from that by Zhu Xi who refers the "nei" and "wai”to "xin"(mind)and "shen"(individual, body)respectively, which reflects the innovation Ansai made for his own philosophical system.By comparing the conception of jing by Zhu Xi and Ansai, this paper intends to highlight the characteristic of Ansai's jing in practicality and sociality is terms of ethics, his self-conscious distinction from Zhu Xi,and his innovation made on the conception of Zhu Xi's jing.In turn, with the conception of jing analyzed, this paper will reveal Ansai's efforts in laying a theoretical foundation for the unity of Shinto and Confucianism.
