Machine Translation Limitations And Post-Editing Solutions

This translation practice report is a research on machine translation limitations and post-editing strategies.The source texts are both speech scripts of experts on intellectual property forums.One of the articles is "Judge of Intellectual Property Court of the Supreme People’s Court--Cui Ning:Necessity and Feasibility of the Optimization of Patent Invalidation Proceedings",and the other is "On the Necessity of Special Legislation on Trade Secrets in China".After comparing the machine translation and the post-edited translation of the two texts,the author summarizes the error types of the machine translation and raises corresponding solutions.The error types are mainly divided as mistranslation of technical terms,lack of fluency,redundancy and collocation errors at the lexical level,awkward expression,literal translation and missing logical.connection at the syntactic level,and unawareness of context and background knowledge at the discourse level.The author exemplifies all the error types,analyzes the post-editing of the machine-translated texts and concludes corresponding solutions.The solutions include searching for and verifying technical terms,improving fluency of the target text,cutting unnecessary repetition,and correcting collocation errors at the lexical level,reorganizing sentence structure,free translation,and supplementing logical connection at the syntactical level and considering the background knowledge and context at the discourse level.Through this report,the author can help translators further deepen their understanding of machine translation and know more about the advantages of human translation.Based on this,the author hopes translation technology and human translators can better supplement each other and improve the working efficiency of translation.
